The investigation enrolls in the cuasi-experimental form. The data were collected from 50 students of English from the second semester at the UPEL-IPB. The sample was divided in two groups: 1 (control group) and 2 (readings related to same control group topic and complementary exercises). A version of the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was used at the beginning and at the end to evaluate word retention. Then, three months later, the test was administered to measure long retention. The results demonstrated the use of extensive reading plus reinforcement exercises facilitate the learning and long retention of words.
