Abstract

Partial results of a research on the role of definition in demonstrations in proposing mathematical tasks are reported. The central problem was addressed in the process of demonstration and test schemes in Doctors in Mathematics. Purposes are presented as (1) Analyze test schemes when these doctors demonstrate and (2) Describe the strategies that implement these mathematicians to prove. In the paper only the second of these is shown. Conceptually, the research is based on the Advanced Mathematical Thinking theoretical approach. Methodologically is a qualitative and field study. The social actors are two doctors from two Venezuelan universities. Among the findings: (1) Mathematicians use formal strategies, (2) doctors consider the domain of definition and context as essential when making a demonstration.
